Second Half of Title I, IDEA and VR Funds To Be Released 30 Days Early
Washington, DC — U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that the Department will accelerate stimulus spending by making $11.37 billion in Title I, IDEA, and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) funding, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), available to states one month early to help save jobs and drive reform.
"The President and I directed the Cabinet to find ways to pick up the pace of Recovery Act implementation, and I applaud this critical step forward by the Department of Education," said Vice President Biden. "With over 30,000 Recovery Act projects already approved nationwide and billions in relief flowing to hard-hit families and businesses, we've made a lot of progress in a short time—but we continue to focus every day on finding ways to ramp up our efforts to put Americans back to work and rebuild our economy."
"After accelerating the release of $2.7 billion in Government Services funds earlier this month, we are now announcing another $11.37 billion in Title I, IDEA and VR funds that will be released early to help states and districts expedite stimulus spending," said Secretary Duncan.
On April 1, 2009 the Department awarded 50 percent of each state's Title I ARRA funds, 50 percent of each state's IDEA ARRA funds, and 50 percent of each state's VR ARRA funds. The remaining 50 percent, or $11.37 billion, was to be made available on September 30. Today's announcement will move up that timeline and ensure that these funds are made available to all states on or around September 1.
The early release of these funds comes on the heels of Department's publication earlier last week of the proposed requirements for approximately $12.6 billion in Phase 2 State Fiscal Stabilization Funds and $4 billion in Race to the Top competitive grants. In addition, the Department earlier last week also invited applications for $250 million in statewide longitudinal data systems competitive grants and released $650 million in Educational Technology funds.
"At the Department, we are doing everything possible to prevent spending decisions from being made in silos and we encourage states and districts to do the same," said Secretary Duncan.
The $5 billion in Title I funding being made available early will go to local educational agencies (LEAs) for schools that have high concentrations of students from families that live in poverty in order to help improve teaching and learning for students most at risk of failing to meet state academic achievement standards. These funds create an unprecedented opportunity for educators to implement innovative strategies in Title I schools that improve education for at-risk students and close the achievement gaps while also stimulating the economy.
The $6.1 billion in IDEA funding being made available early will provide an unprecedented opportunity for states, LEAs and early intervention service providers to implement innovative strategies to improve outcomes for infants, toddlers, children and youths with disabilities, while stimulating the economy. The $270 million in VR funding being made available early will provide state VR agencies an opportunity to further improve employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities, especially those with the most significant disabilities.

My Very Own ABC Book
This alphabet book is designed to be more useful than pre-assembled published books because it helps children create their own links to each letter. Valentine’s Day Crafts for Preschoolers and Kindergartners

Valentine’s Day Crafts for Young Children
Sure, kids get all excited about buying valentines for their classmates, but there’s nothing like getting a homemade valentine from a child.

Beginning Blend and Digraph Sound Cards
Sound Cards (or "sound boards" as they are sometimes called) provide for students references for letters/sounds found at that beginning of words. For each blend and digraph there is a picture and key word to help students internalize the association.
When students read or write, the sound card is an easy reference when hunting for a letter for an associated sound. Also, this particular sound card helps students figure out word families.

The Word Writing Books
Written by veteran teacher Pam Miles, these writing reference books will become a valuable asset for every student. Each book begins with a personal speller in alphabetic order and each page contains lists of commonly used words and spaces for your students to add their own. The personal speller is followed by quick reference pages of common abbreviations, contractions, number words, colors, family names, etc. depending on the level (A, B or C) of the book. Literacy Task Cards
Hopefully you know already that the Literacy Task Cards, Set 1: Word Building and Set 2: Vocabulary Development by authors Developed with authors Linda Dorn, Carla Soffos, and Teresa Treat have been available again since November. We want to thank all of you who have placed orders for the Task Cards already!

As you may already know, due to changes in the industry and economic situation, the previous owners of Teaching Resource Center closed the warehouse in San Diego. My Very Own Poetry Collection First Grade: 101 Poems for First Graders
The poems in this personal poetry collection have taken into account themes and topics for first graders: poems about "me;" school, community, and our country; animal poems; math poems; science poems about life cycles and much more! The poems in the collection are from four to fifteen lines long.

My Very Own Poetry Collection K: 101 Poems for Kindergartners
Poetry is such a perfect way to introduce kindergartners to the early stages of literacy. It's brief. It's fun. It's got rhythm! The poems in this personal poetry collection have been carefully crafted to meet the specific needs of kindergartners. Themes and topics used by most kindergarten teachers are the focus of the collection. There are poems about friendship and family, the seasons, the first and last day of school, animals, and much, much more.
Most of the poems are from four to six lines long, making tracking easier for the emergent reader. The longer poems have very few words per line or include lots of repetition. In addition, an "anchor word" begins nearly every title and poem. Having a high frequency word as the first word of the title and the poem gives kinders a sense of confidence. Once they've read a word that is an old friend, off they go!
