Preschool-2nd Grade
First, read aloud and discuss one of the following books.
- Where the Wild Things Are Most teachers probably have this. If not, the school library probably has it. Students can use workbook paper to write and illustrate a short story about a monster.
- Little Monster Becomes an Author Perfect for a writers' workshop lesson teaching the steps involved in writing. It's the book on the upper left in the photo on this link. This book can be used as a model for story writing. After reading the book the students can write a story about a monster using the story writing process described in the book.
Monster Mask Craft
Materials:
- paper plate
- stapler
- glue
- paint (any colors)
- paint brush
- wikki stix or yarn (any colors)
- scissors
- pom poms (any colors)
Instructions:
- Cut out holes for the eyes.
- Paint the plate and let it dry.
- Press wikki stix (or glue yarn) around the eyes.
- Glue a pom pom in the middle of the face for a nose.
- Use wikki stix to make a mouth. Press firmly onto the paper plate.
- Staple the yarn on each side of the mask, so it can be tied to fit around the child's head.
- Glue the pom poms around the edges of the plate.
