Be the Change this September 11th September 07 2009
"Be the change you wish to see in the world." --Gandhi
This is the foundational sentiment for the organization that calls themselves "Be the Change." Headed by founder and CEO Alan Khazei, this organization is dedicated to rallying citizens to participate "...in the conversations, debates and elections which set public policy, by taking responsibility for the democracy we all share."
What I find more fascinating is the division of this organization called Service Nation, which has set aside September 11th as a day not only of remembrance, but of service. The terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, fundamentally changed our lives through the tragedies that occured in those early morning hours. What better way to honor those who lost their lives than by serving others?
I know it's early in the school year, and we are all stressed and busy. But this day of service has the potential to sow lessons in your students' character about honoring loss, healing through tragedy, and the importance of legacy. I encourage you to check out the opportunities available in your community, not just for you, but for your students as well.
