Your students will love making leprechaun traps while they learn about the scientific concepts of push, pull and lever. Leprechauns will visit your classroom looking for gold coins. When your students return to the classroom after lunch they will find sparkling, green footprints and notes from a leprechaun! Here’s the free note and art to decorate the leprechaun traps.
Students are encouraged to be creative and develop their own way to trap the leprechaun. Then, they explain whether the leprechaun experienced push, pull or a lever. Therefore, the supplies will vary and depend upon what the teacher and students have available. Here’s a list to use as a flexible guide. This project can be a classroom lesson or given as a homework assignment.
Additional materials may vary depending upon the students design, but can consist of:
- tissue paper
- popsicle sticks
- saran wrap
- tin foil
- wikki stix
- chennile stems/pipe cleaners
- Students draw sketches of their leprechaun traps and explain how the traps will work in a short paragraph.
- Students talk with each other and the teacher about whether their trap will encourage the leprechaun to push, pull or use a lever.
- Color the Saint Patrick’s Day Art
- Cover the box with green construction paper and design the trap as it was sketched.
- Cut out the Saint Patrick’s Day art.
- Glue the Saint Patrick’s Day art onto the trap.
- Sparkle with green or gold glitter (optional).
- Each student writes a note to the leprechaun and leaves a gold coin for him in the trap.
- Allow the students to set the traps before lunch time on Saint Patrick’s Day. If possible, recruit a volunteer parent to take photos of each student standing by his/her leprechaun trap. These photos can be kept for each student’s classroom memory book.
- Teacher makes copies of the note from the leprechaun and leaves it on each trap. Don’t forget to make footprints using the glitter, baby powder and baby/toddler shoes. If you’d like to keep the footprints up on the walls all year, you can use green paint to make footprints. To make the paint footprints, use your hands by making a fist. The bottom part of your hand (where your pinky finger is curled) looks like the bottom of a bare foot, so dip it into the paint. Then, use your pointer finger to make dots for each toe. After you make the footprints, set off each trap, turn over chairs and mess up the room. This also might be a fun time for a picture to save for your classroom memory books and blog/website.
- After lunch the students will see the footprints, visited traps and notes from the leprechaun.
